If you have recently returned from your holiday and had a field day with your digital camera than you find yourself with a wide range of images, all with file names completely unsuggestive for the places you have visited. What can you do ? Well for one thing you can look for a file renamer. You can for example quickly change the DSC001 name of your images to a more appropriate one such as MadridHoliday-001 or a pre-defined string of characters of your choice. Here is an application of this kind bound to help you do exactly that.

What is WinFR

WinFR (Windows File Renamer) provides users with a quick and effective renaming solution.

The utility is able to process multiple files at the same time renaming all the files included in the list in just one go. You get to view all modifications before applying them with the help of the preview function. WinFR has a wide range of capabilities including renaming file numbering, renaming, removing, capitalization and much more.

Using WinFR is fairly intuitive. Get started by adding the files you wish subject to renaming actions on the program's list. You can add files in multiple number of ways by using the standard dialog, power dialog, drag and drop actions on the main interface or the program's icon or from lists. Sort the list of files if necessary. Files added to the list will activate the preview function. If you have reached the final step of your modifications and accept them, then the files will be renamed. The preview includes multiple views depending on your need (details, details with icons, icons). Files contained in the preview list can be sorted using multiple criteria; to do this all you need is click on a column of your choice.

Files in the preview list can be subjected to one or more renaming actions. Here are the renaming functions available for WinFR:

- Numbering - works wonders for entire collections of photographs, tv series and many other scenarios. You can use decimal numbers (default) or letters, start from an initial value, choose the increment, how many places it should fill, random numbering is also available, restard numbering based on a given criteria such as day or month, choose and intermediate character, replace the whole file name with an input string of your own.
- Modify numbering - you can modify an existing numbering set by entering new or remove files into a numbering, change parameters such as the initial value and increment and more.
- Date / Time - extend a file's name with date and time specifications. Use values such as source (WinFR is able to use EXIF data from pictures), type, format, prefix / suffix as well as date and time, intermetiate character, and replace the file's name with an input string of your choice.
- File Extension - you can replace the file's extension of multiple files. Change the whole extension, remove it altogether or add a new one to the existing extension.
- Capitalization - change to various upper and lower case strings.
- Prefix / Suffix - given characters can be used as prefixes or suffixes to the file name.
- Replace / Remove - any character from the file name can be removed or replaced by a user input set of characters. Choose what characters to replace or text, a position, all characters expect a given set.
- Insert - WinFR digs deep for file information details. You can choose a text to insert, path name, insert EXIF (digital camera shot photographs) or ID3 data (MP3 file information), insert date / time, intermediate character, insert characters at a given position, at the beginning or end of file name, before or after a set of characters.
- Move - change the position of a set of characters from the file name from one place to another.
- Trim - remove a number of characters from the file name. First / Last X characters or whole characters from X to Y and more.
- Name Structure - given a schema you can use renaming to assemble file names.
- Get new names from file - using a CSV file you can enter a whole list of file names that renaming will use on the list. Great when dealing with ripped CD audio files.

Note that you can add multiple sets of rules grouped up together and not just one. WinFR allows you to fully customize the output. The preview is in place to provide an accurate description of the output without actually accepting modifications.

Apart from all this, WinFR also provides two built in tools that you will certainly find useful: a duplicate finder and folder synchronizer.

With WinFR you can track all duplicate across your system that are taking up space needlessly. Once found you will be prompted with a choice of actions: No action, Remove marked files from preview, Move market files to another folder, Delete marked files.

If you need to bring your work files at home, day after day WinFR provides a helpful functionality: you can quickly synchronize your folder from the PC at work to the one at home. Folders are compared and afterwards WinFR will copy the newly changed files to the list.

Multiple other functions are included aimed at the most advanced of users and must be activated from the Options dialog. They include scripting, ID3 tag mass data changing, sorting the preview, support for EXIF values and much more.

While at first glance, a simple tool, WinFR does include a wide range and rather flexible number of file renaming capabilities making it suitable for both novice and power users alike depending on needs.

WinFR is a powerful application able to deal with just about any aspect of batch renaming files. You can add multiple files to the list and apply sets of rules to reach the output you wanted. Preview is available to help you view the output without actually applying the modifications.This is certain to save you precious time and subsequently money.

The application also adds to its list of features a duplicate finder helping users find and delete exact pieces of data for the benefit of your hard drive space as well as a folder synchronizer.
