Screen savers are applications initially conceived to prevent monitors from the phosphor burn-in effect which would display a ghost image in the background (the case for CRT and plasma type monitors). This may not be such a big issue anymore (LCD monitors less susceptible) and screen savers tend to provide provide a comfortable, relaxing and even entertaining background to your display while not working actively on the computer.

What is Wake Up ?

While a screen saver utility at heart, Wake Up uses the concept behind slide shows to provide a custom visual display when your computer goes idle. Wake Up is a portable, freeware that allows access to a wide range of customizable features to help the user create its own personal screen saver and control how it will run.

Wake Up uses images extracted from a given folder to display them in a slide show like fashion. Unlike ordinary screen savers, the application runs in the system tray and will load according to your settings.

Getting Started with Wake Up

Start by pinpointing to the disk location of the folder containing images, filter the formats you wish to use - a choice between Jpeg, Gif, Bmp, Png, Tiff type pictures. The number of images detected will be displayed. The screen saver automatically uses the same resolution as the desktop. Images are randomized so that they are all displayed once for each cycle.

Set the idle timeout which represents the computer idle time until Wake Up will trigger the screen saver - between 1 minute and 3 hours.

Define the time until the next image sets in - between 100 ms and 5 minutes.

After a designated time period, Wake Up can cease to run - Halt after anything between 1 minute and 10 hours.

You may also choose to display the file name while transitioning the images. Will also show the next and last images; users can skip to the next using the Ctrl button while the screen saver is running.

Zooming refers to the width of the screen; if you own a wide screen monitor you may want to increase the zoom value over the 100 percentage.

Choose the desktop fading functionality if you wish to get a glimpse of anything running on your screen while images are transitioned; customizable values 1 to 75. Same thing goes for the task bar, you may choose to have it displayed at all time, something of interest may pop up.

Multiple presets are available with pre-defined values so make sure you give that try and find out which one is the most appropriate for you.

After setting up each control you can do a test and see if that works out for you. Press Hide and Start and Wake Up will sit unobtrusively in the system tray and wait patiently for the designated time idle computer time to set in.

Wake Up requires no installation, simply extract the contents of the archive and run the executable. It does however require the pre-installation of .Net Framework 2.0 or higher to work.

Weighing just 50KB, Wake Up will take virtually no disk space and won't cost you a dime. Give it a try and create your own slide show screen saver!
