There are many users out there who constantly use GPS (Global Positioning System) in order to get to various locations or to get information about their current location (like geographical coordinates). But what happens when you need a GPS input but you can't use it or you have no signal on your GPS? A simple solution to this kind of problem is the handy Virtual GPS.
Virtual GPS, as its name clearly states, is an easy to use piece of software that basically simulates an actual GPS receiver. With the help of this lightweight application you can test all kinds of GPS applications, because it supports various NMEA 0183 sentences (GPGLL, GPGGA, GPVTG, GPRMC, GPGSA, GPGSV, GPZDA, GPWPL, GPRTE, GPAAM).
There are two modes in which you can use the Virtual GPS. The simulation mode is pretty intuitive and it will constantly increment the geographical coordinates (latitude and longitude). You will have to specify the start longitude and latitude, as well as several other parameters like navigational and magnetic parameters or latitude and longitude steps by entering the "Settings" menu. The second mode in which Virtual GPS can be used is in the "File mode". Here, all of your GPS data will be loaded from your provided text file which contains NMEA 0183 sentences.
In order to get the output data from Virtual GPS you will have to either connect two serial ports or you can use a virtual serial port (there are many applications available on the market that will help you do that). Furthermore, Virtual GPS allows you to broadcast the data through Bluetooth, IrDA connections, serial ports or even USB. There are many simple ways in which you can retrieve the data from the simulator. It is only a matter of choice.
In addition, Virtual GPS allows you to set various waypoints (you will only need to provide the longitude and latitude) and follow multiple satellites in order to monitor their movement in a real-time mode.
