When dealing in a business environment with records that are supposed to be unique, it is vital to detect and eliminate duplicates. FuzzyDupes is an application that does exactly that with support for multiple database formats.
Creating queries may seem like an obvious step but what happens when you are dealing with records that are not 100% duplicates and only share a percentage of similarity (and are essentially the same data) ? This is where FuzzyDupes steps in, a specialized tool that can distinguish and estimate which records are potential duplicates (that is apart from detecting sharp duplicates).
FuzzyDupes has a wizard like functionality; start by creating a new project, select the datasource (supports MS-Access, MS SQL server, MS Excel table, text / csv file, MS Outlook Contacts, Windows Address Book, SharePoint Server, BulkMailer Addresses and others) and associated connection / file.
Proceed by identifying the primary key, a column with distinct values.
In the Duplicate Fields, select columns for cluster creation; should be of character / string types. For the Duplicate Search column, select those that you wish to be compared against one another. In the Weights you can stress which column will be given more or less importance. NULL Comparison is where empty fields are used for the calculation of the average correspondence between two distinct records.
Normalization contains by default 3 rules, customizable in the Rules Editor. Standard normalization will convert all characters to uppercase and replaces special characters.
The Options tab is the final step of the wizard and here is where you can setup the cluster size and threshold duplicates value.
