A free, portable and effective means for testing out your disk's speed using both read and write stress tests.
Editor's Description
Have you recently purchased a new hard disk and want to test out its capabilities ? Or perhaps you own an old disk and looking to see if it worth upgrading. You can do this in a simple manner: by copying one folder / file from one drive / location to another you can measure the time interval and use this value as well as size of file / folder to evaluate the speed. This is an effective means for benchmarking your disk speed but it does take a bit of manual labor and this is where Disk Bench steps in.

What is Disk Bench ?

Disk Bench is a smart little tool that allows users to accurately check their drive's speed; it does so by employing a few well known techniques such as file / folder copying, creating / reading a file(s).

As soon as you run the utility you notice that it has a pretty straightforward graphical interface making it quite simple to use; divided into tabs, Disk Bench's functionality is as follows: Copy File, Copy Directory, Create File, Read File, Create File Batch.

Copy File / Directory will prompt you to choose a piece of data / folder to copy user specified source and destination. After the data is copied, the transfer rate is provided along with size and time values.

Another method for evaluating disk speed is file creation; the two built-in tools allow the user to create a file or batch of files with a pre-defined size, number of blocks and files. This is an effective disk stress means and at the end will again provide disk response for each of the files it has created.

We have seen the writing tests and the reading one is provided through the Read File tab: simply input a file a the number of blocks and Disk Bench will display the transfer rate output.

Another cool feature of the application is the fact that it requires no installation; all you have to do is extract the contents of the archive and run the executable. You can carry Disk Bench around in a USB stick and check read and write abilities of multiple disks without having leaving any registry trace.

What's more, Disk Bench is completely Free and fully compatible with most Windows releases including Xp, Vista and 7. Give it a try.
