When it comes to working with accented characters, currency / symbols and other special characters part of the Unicode language code, Windows offers a few possibilities, none of which too great. It is nearly impossible to remember Alt codes and quite inconvenient if you have to manually insert them from an editor. Luckily there is an application designed to fix all this - CatchChar.
CatchChar is a smart, effective and convenient tool that allows users to quickly enter special characters with the minimum of effort.
CatchChar has a simple usage centered around the menu you bring up with the help of a pre-defined hotkey. The menu will contain the special characters and symbols you find yourself using on a regular basis.
The utility lies unobtrusively in the system tray area with right click context menu support.
To enter special characters in any edit box or editor, press Alt-Shift-C (default hotkey) together. A special character menu appears from where you select the special character to insert it.
Users can create multiple such menus, save them in separate files and conveniently use them when the need arises. Fully customize the menu with control over order and separator; you can test out the menu you have just created.
CatchChar's functionality can be stopped at a press of a button and re-enabled by starting the program.
The application is compatible with any text editor, text form etc, so you can easily integrate it with your favorite applications.
Another interesting CatchChar feature is its portability; you only have to install the application on your desktop PC, copy the executable to your portable device and change its name from catchchar.exe to catchcharportable.exe.
