Chess is one of the oldest and most popular games with a history spanning across the latest 1500 years. There have been countless books written on this topic about tactics, combinations, openings that champions have used but as of recent times a new opponent is slowly taking over and unsurprisingly, it's the computer itself. Ever since IBM's Deep Blue win over Garry Kasparov in 1996, the attention has been focused and even ported to desktop computers in the form of many chess games. Here is one successful implementation called Arasan Chess.
Arasan is a chess program created for multiple platforms including Windows, Linux and Mac OS. It is designed to give users a very challenging chess game but can also be used against other chess programs.
Arasan has a simple and easily customizable interface; you can choose your own font, board size, board colors for both light and dark squares. Setup the difficulty to a convenient level; for a less difficult game, Arasan will take very little time to move.
Players can always take back moves, receive hints, copy moves and perform various other actions as well.
What makes Arasan particularly special is the console-based chess engine designed for use with Winboard or xboard. Arasan is also compatible with Arena, another free chess interface, and with UCI-compatible programs like Shredder.
Arasan is released as an open-source tool making it completely Free to use so give it a try.
